The student objective will cover basic music skills:

  • Basic keyboard topography and fluent recognition of white key names in relation to black keys.
  • Simple rhythms that prepare students for intervallic reading with entertaining songs that focus on “same,” “stepping up” and “stepping down”.
  • Lines and space notes in treble and bass clefs, melodic and harmonic intervals of 2nds, 3rds, 4ths and 5ths, graduating to reading on the grand staff.
  • Flat and sharp signs.
  • Incomplete measures, tempo markings, eighth notes and rests, using the damper pedal, half steps and whole steps.
  • Introduction of the major scale through the concept of tetrachords.

You will determine with your teacher at your first lesson which piano lesson book will be most appropriate to use (student must purchase their own book).  Students who have had previous piano lessons can bring the materials they have been using to the first lesson.  Bring a notebook and pen as well.  The instructor requires that the parent is at the lesson and engaged, this will help with practice and learning at home.  Call 360-885-6584 to schedule your 30 minute lesson.
